The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in September and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
